It was difficult to put our finger on this month's issue. Not for a lack of focus, but rather because of the main focus: skin radiance.

The concept of skin radiance is somewhat subjective, existing in both the realms of physical light reflectance and scattering, and mental wellness or mood; it's reminiscent of psychodermatology. Jeudy, et al.,1 wrote, "Skin radiance is a complex parameter that involves the quantity of light reflected from the skin (physical definition), but also a ... psychological part and physical [characteristics] like skin color and skin relief."

Skin radiance also goes by many other names:

  • luminosity,
  • glow,
  • brightness,
  • glass skin,
  • glazed donut skin, etc.
  • and more recently, pearl skin.2

In the end, though, comes back to the desired characteristics of healthy, flawless and youthful-looking skin, which is the main focus of this issue.

Meunier, et al., show how a vegan silk-like material can enhance skin healing while providing protection, soothing irritation and fading skin imperfections. Aral delves deeper into the definition of skin radiance to, in turn, explain ways to measure it, with a special consideration for skin texture.

The crowd-sourced Expert Opinions article shares industry perspectives on current trends and future ideas for well aging and skin radiance product development. Meanwhile, the Industry Insight uncovers how the beauty and facial skin care segment is shaping body skin care — including implementing ingredients for anti-aging and skin brightening effects.

As a bonus, in light of today's market demand for anti-hair loss products, we highlight Zeng, et al.'s, study testing a kudzu isoflavone extract-powered hair tonic to mitigate female hair loss. Also, Xu provides her regular Asia-Pacific Regulatory Update, while Gleason-Allured, from our sister brand Global Cosmetic Industry, reveals recent ingredient trends such as exosomal beauty, alternative ingredients and array of others ranging from functional water to fit skin.

We hope our latest issue radiates new concepts and innovations to brighten your beauty product development.
