The 2024 IFSCC Congress, to be held Oct. 14-17, 2024, in Iguazu Falls, Brazil, is centered around the theme of: "Biodiversity and Cosmetics: Reaching Sustainable Technologies." The annual event aims to gather people from around the world who are interested in the science behind beauty and cosmetic products. Per the organizers, it attracts a diverse list of keynote speakers who share ideas and stories that inspire and empower attendees who are shaping the future of our industry.

Cosmetic Science and Innovation
The core scientific sessions, held Oct. 15-17, will cover topics ranging from sustainability, safer and better sunscreens, a ferment filtrate for hair/scalp care, natural polymer coacervates to encapsulate retinol, skin microbiome, acne, stick formulation, anti-aging and skin hydration/plumping; to skin penetration, collagen boosting, hyperpigmentation control, seaweed skin protection, odor masking and control, green chemistry, longevity, hair bleaching, oral care, peptides, rosacea and inflammation and much more. In addition, L'Oréal and Grupo Boticário will kick things off with two pre-congress workshops, held Oct. 14, which are centered on sustainability — and biotech to achieve such. Following is an overview.
L'Oréal Workshop 1: Shape the Future of Cosmetics
Oct. 14; 9:00 - 11:30 a.m.
L'Oréal's workshop will open with an introduction from a star presenter (tbd). Following this, the program will discuss:
- Planetary boundaries: Emily Dionizio, GHG Specialist, WRI (World Resources Institute), will present on understanding environmental science and what the planet can sustain.
- Translating into objectives and KPIs: Isabelle Rollat, Director of Sustainable Innovation and EcoDesign, L’Oréal R&I, will discuss designing science-based targets, methodologies and tools for holistic sustainable action.
- Transforming ingredients: Mathias Fleury, Head of the Actives Category at Givaudan, will describe sustainable sourcing practices and green transformation.
- Transparency and engaging consumers: Finally, Iguatemi Costa, Senior Scientific Manager for Natural and Sustainable Ingredients, NATURA, will introduce the EcoBeautyScore Consortium and scoring system.
Grupo Boticário Workshop 2: Biotech and Sustainability
Oct. 14; 13:00 - 16:30 (1:00 - 4:30 p.m.)
Grupo Boticário's workshop will also align with sustainability, especially in terms of how biotechnology can be leveraged in this capacity.
- Upcycling and biotechnology: Jaciane Lutz Ienczak, adjunct professor, Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, will present, "Sustainable Innovation in the Cosmetics Industry: Upcycling and the Vanguard of Biotechnological Products."
- Yeast mycosporins: Renata Pascon, of Universidade Federal de São Paulo, will speak on "Biotechnology and Beauty: Yeast Mycosporins."
- Sustainable actives production: Flavia Guaragna, Research and Technology Latam Director, Croda, will highlight, "Biotechnology Applied to the Sustainable Production of Cosmetic Active Ingredients."
- Collaborations in biotech: Larissa Zonta, Especialista Pesquisa e Inteligência de Produtos, Grupo Boticário, will discuss, "Advances in Biotechnology in the Cosmetics Industry: Collaborations in Research Projects as Catalysts for Innovation."
- Characterizing biotech materials: Juliana Cibi Amorim Telles, of Grupo Boticário, will give "An Overview on Characterization, Safety and Efficacy During Ingredient and Product Development."
