"The skin barrier is the new wrinkle," C&T advisor John Jiménez, of Belcorp, observed at in-cosmetics Global this year. Consider the prevalence of ceramide and lipid beauty products in the market. Global Market Insights valued the cosmetic lipids market at more than US $10 billion in 2022 and projects a 5.5% CAGR from 2023-2032. Future Market Insights estimates that ceramide skin care will continue to boom at a CAGR of 5.7% to reach US $739.4 million (2024-2034). Cocokind's ceramide barrier serum offers a textbook example, which we highlight here.
Cocokind's Barrier Cream to Reinforce Hydration, Comfort
Built to support hydration, Cocokind's serum is infused with five types of ceramides: np, ns, ap, eos and eop (ceramides 3, 2, 6-II, 1 and 9, respectively) and other lipids (fatty acids, cholesterol, squalane) to seal in moisture and reduce transepidermal water loss and signs of irritation. Per the company, it leaves skin noticeably hydrated, supple and more "comfortable."
Additional benefits include:
- Restores healthy structure and function to the skin barrier;
- Supports skin’s natural ceramide production, thanks to ceramide precursors caprooyl phytosphingosine and caprooyl sphingosine;
- Helps smooth texture with increased suppleness, in part due to beta glucan — a "powerful humectant that brings in hydration and helps plump the skin;"
- Softens skin;
- Hypoallergenic and allergy-tested; and
- Protect against dehydration, external aggressors and signs of aging.
Role of Ceramides in Skin
Myeong Jun Choi, Ph.D., and Howard I. Maibach, M.D., previously described the role of ceramides in skin. "Nine subclasses of ceramide have been described in human stratum corneum. [T]hese differ from each other by the sphingoid base groups ... and hydrocarbon chain length.
"Ceramides are the main polar lipids of the SC intercellular lipids, playing an important role in skin barrier function and accounting for half of the SC lipids by weight." Furthermore, per the authors, stress "induces changes in the ceramide content of the skin, and may lead to compromised barrier function or skin diseases."
Thus, by targeting ceramide deficiencies, Cocokind aims to rebalance skin's natural abilities to regenerate and protect itself.
Example User Testimonials of Ceramide Serum
A sampling of user testimonials referencing the claimed benefits, as well as the apparent efficacy (anecdotal) of this approach, include the following (edited slightly):
- [This serum] makes my skin feel so hydrated and healthy, which I especially need while traveling.
- This serum is the only reason I can use tretinoin. Without it, my skin barrier was damaged and sensitive. With the ceramide barrier cream in my routine, I can use Tret every other day.
- Skin feels moisturized without feeling heavy. Does not break my skin out, this is a big win for my acne prone skin.
- I live in a super dry climate, have acne prone skin and lots of redness. My skin looooveesss this stuff... I use it morning and night and have had it on subscription once a month for the past two years. Using this has helped eliminate a bunch of other expensive products I wasn’t seeing results from.
