Procter & Gamble has launched what it terms an effective alternative to synthetic and artificial preservatives. White Mustard Essential Oil (WMEO) is the natural extract of white mustard seeds that reportedly delivers broad anti-microbial efficacy against bacteria, yeast and mold.
Although its application to cosmetics has not been investigated, WMEO has applications in beverages, meats, poultry, salads, gravies and sauces. Maltodextrin and white mustard essential oil are both listed in the Code of Federal Regulations as GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe) for use in food products (Code of Federal Regulations, 21CFR184.1444 and 21CFR182.20).
The two predominant chemical preservatives used today in beverage applications are benzoates and sorbates. Non-natural, artificial or synthetic preservatives typically used to preserve ready-to-drink (RTD) are usually not suitable for all-natural beverages, pose regulatory approval issues in certain countries, and can not function effectively in nutrient-fortified beverages. The new ingredient is said to offer an all-natural preservative without a negative sensory impact. According to the company, it can be applied where other preservatives cannot while still providing the same efficacy as non-natural preservatives.
Although the ingredient was not tied to cosmetics, perhaps the food and beverage industry will inspire the personal care industry to discover natural preservatives. Many believe they do not exist, but the food and beverage industry has proved otherwise.
The ingredient can reportedly generate significant cost savings for manufacturers. For more information, visit www.pg.com.
