The orchid is a flower that is well known for its beauty and fragrance. Women’s and men’s fragrances often have notes of orchid. Unbeknownst to some, the orchid has branched out from fragrances into skin care, hair care and even color cosmetics. It has been used in Asia for centuries, mostly for its reparative and protective properties. However, the use of orchid extract and orchid complex in these categories has become more popular in the United States only in recent years, according to Mintel Cosmetic Research. Orchids are now being touted for moisturizing, fighting free radicals, increasing skin immunity and reducing the appearance of fine lines. Orchids are becoming so popular that not only are they popping up in individual products, they are also serving as inspiration for entire ranges.
Perhaps one of the most publicized cosmetic products featuring orchid so far this year is Cargo PlantLove Botanical Lipstick. The lipstick features a botanical formulation with orchid complex and meadowfoam seed oil. This product has already proven to be popular, as it combines several trends of the moment. It is biodegradable, charitable and celebrity-endorsed. The lipstick case is made from corn, and the packaging is embedded with seeds that can be planted directly into the ground after use. Portions of the sales proceeds will be donated to St. Jude Children’s Hospital. Several of the shades were designed and inspired by celebrities.
Mintel Global New Products Database reveals that in Japan, orchid extract is used in several highly visible skin care lines. The Kanebo Twany line features orchid extract in many of its whitening products. Kosè Infinity launched several brightening and antiaging products containing orchid extract. Meanwhile, in the United States and France, ranges from Guerlain, Ted Gibson and Sue Devitt are proving to be loyally devoted to the use of orchid extract in their products’ compositions.
The orchid appears to be a muse in the Guerlain Orchidée Impériale range of skin care. The orchid reportedly was chosen for the flower's beauty and longevity. Researchers at Guerlain discovered that the orchid’s beauty and "eternal youth" could be traced to the cells found deep within its roots; thus they worked to reproduce the same functionality. The use of the imperial orchid resulted in recent launches including Exceptional Complete Care Eye & Lip Cream, Exceptional Complete Care Fluid, and Concentrated Facial Cream.
Ted Gibson hair care products also contain orchid extract. The Ted Gibson shampoos, conditioners, serums, and hair sheets all feature orchid extract. The orchid extract is said to help repair damaged hair, prevent moisture loss and promote health and manageability. The Goodnite Replenish Hair Repair Serum claims to use wild orchid extract to sooth the senses and the scalp.
Sue Devitt recently has launched two products that prominently feature the orchid. The Microquatic Prime Target Intensive Treatment Primer with Orchid Extract and the Microquatic Pro-Marine Tinted Moisturizer SPF 30 with Orchid Extract are both designed to provide moisture and protection. The eye treatment primer uses orchid extract to naturally moisturize the skin and protect it with antioxidants to leave eyes appearing hydrated and revitalized.
