The Research Institute of Fragrance Materials (RIFM) article, “In vitro penetration and subchronic toxicity of a-Methyl-1,3-benzodioxole-5-propionaldehyde,” declared that MMDHCA is safe to use as a fragrance ingredient in addition to 20 other materials in the structure activity group.
The article was co-authored by Anne Marie Api, PhD, vice president of Human Health Sciences; Aurelia Lapczynski, environmental specialist; and Daniel A. Isola, former manager of respiratory sciences, at RIFM with Prof. I. Glenn Sipes, PhD, head of the department of pharmacology, college of medicine at the University of Arizona and chair of RIFM’s Expert Panel (REXPAN).
a-Methyl-1,3-benzodioxole-5-propionaldehyde (MMDHCA) is a colorless to slight yellow liquid fragrance ingredient with a sweet floral and mildly herbaceous odor that is used worldwide in cosmetics, fine fragrances, shampoos, toilet soaps as well as in detergents and household cleaners.
MMDHCA is part of the aldehyde aryl alkylcinnamic and propionaldehyde fragrance structure activity group and is used in large volumes (> 100 metric tons per year worldwide). This study of MMDHCA supports its use as a fragrance ingredient as well as the other 20 materials in the structure activity group.
