L'Oréal honored five women for their research at the L'Oréal USA Fellowships for Women in Science Awards. The women honored included: Jaime Barnes, Sarah Clinton, Julie Huber, Maria Krisch and Kim Woodrow. Sally Ride, PhD, the first woman to fly in space, was given the Women in Science Role Model Award for her influence on women in science.
According to the company, women are underrepresented in science. L'Oréal is trying to change this by encouraging women to become involved in science. Each winner recieved a US$40,000 grant that will go toward their independent scientific research. In addition to awarding achievements in science, the fellowship strengthens the networks in the scientific community and provides professional development workshops with women leaders. According to L'Oréal, nearly 22 countries have held national fellowship ceremonies.
