Current Issues, and Future Status of Natural Ingredients and Biotechnology

As the demand for natural cosmetic products continues to increase, the challenge escalates to sustain the supply of natural resources. A percentage of the planet’s natural resources are sustainable, and some have been engineered to be so through technological developments, however all are not without the possibility of extinction.

According to the Kew Report, 77% of undescribed vascular plants and 45% of known flowering plants are estimatedto be threatened with extinction.1 According to the United Nations, global natural resource consumption is forecasted to rise 60% by 2060 as compared to the statistics of 2020.2.  And a new study in the journal, Nature Sustainability shows 72% of the world’s population lacks resource security.3

Despite these challenges, biotechnology is emerging as a promising solution to address the sustainability reality of natural plant extinction.
